Over the years, many people have asked me about my absence from streaming platforms. If you ever tried to find me on Spotify, for example, you might have found another Brazilian musician – a rock guitarist - with the same name. As for me, I have avoided streaming platforms both as an artist and as a listener. In part, my avoidance has to do with a lack of time to professionally build my online presence: I’m not a fan of the online environment; I have a hard time seeing my work as “content,” or myself as a “content creator.”

Another reason for my absence is my distrust and lack of sympathy for people who profit from other people’s works without paying the artists' fair share. It’s well known that musicians get paid very little for their streamed works. You might have read about Daniel Ek, the CEO of Spotify, asserting recently that "today, with the cost of creating content being close to zero, people can share an incredible amount of content.” Well, that statement didn’t sit well with many of us, artists, who continue to spend a lot of money to fulfill our artistic passion. But what could we expect from a billionaire who hasn’t produced any music, and who can’t tell the difference between art and ”content?” 

But this is a complex subject and I’m not trying to start the conversation. My point here is that I have now come to the decision to invest time into a bigger online presence. The motivation: I have friends in many parts of the world, and I want to share my music with them. At a time when we make very few CDs to sell, the only way to guarantee that your music will reach people is by making it widely available. I guess it’s time for me to get on board.

This decision to join the streaming platforms comes from my excitement to share my upcoming CD with everyone. I sit here this weekend with all the finalized mixes; I have the task to listen to them very closely and to give my final approval before they head to the mastering engineer. I couldn’t be happier with the recording!

Back to the streaming platforms: you will find me on Spotify, Pandora, Deezer, Tidal, Apple Music, iHeart, etc. (Geez, there are so many of them!) under the artist page Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra. The group’s first CD, Infância, which was recorded in 2017, is now available to stream in all of these platforms. More importantly, I’d love to get followers on them, in preparation for the release of the next album, in January 2025!
