EPK Cassio Vianna

"It is clear that Vianna is a master of his craft, a worthy successor to such venerated gurus as Neal Hefti, Sammy Nestico, Shorty Rogers, Bill Holman, Hank Levy, Johnny Mandel, Pete Rugolo, Billy May, Marty Paich, Gerry Mulligan and many others." (Jack Bowers, All About Jazz).

Cassio Vianna is a pianist, arranger, producer, music educator, and an award-winning composer whose works reflect a broad range of musical and cultural influences. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Vianna had an active career as a performer and producer in the vibrant Rio de Janeiro music scene until moving to the U.S. in 2009 to further his music studies.

Vianna’s arrangements have been performed by artists such as Eric Marienthal, Wayne Bergeron, Chris Potter, Ernie Watts, and the United States Army Field Band (Jazz Ambassadors), among others. In addition to his busy work as a composer and arranger, Cassio Vianna is also the Director of Jazz Studies, Associate Professor of Music at Pacific Lutheran University.

Vianna’s albums include Letters to Grace: a Song Cycle (Cassio Vianna, 2011), Infância (Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra, 2017) and most recently, Vida (Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra, 2025), which features a special guest appearance by saxophonist Eric Marienthal.

new album: vida (2025)

"Vida is the second album by the impressive 17-piece big band. The Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra is filled with some of the top jazz artists from Washington State. All eight compositions on this release were written, arranged and orchestrated by its leader. Throughout Vida, Cassio Vianna’s writing is melodic, generally utilizes rhythms that reflect his Brazilian heritage, and features ensembles that are colorful and accessible while being a bit unpredictable. It is no surprise that the musicians in the orchestra sound consistently inspired by the writing on Vida. Cassio Vianna is a talented big band arranger and composer who deserves to be much better known. Fans of modern big bands will enjoy Vida." - Scott Yanow, jazz historian & journalist.

"After listening to Cassio Vianna’s wonderful new album Vida, I am in awe of his work as a composer, arranger and conductor. Cassio was able to get a team of excellent American jazz players to sound like a Brazilian gafieira band – not a small feat, considering the grooves and syncopations that define this genre of orchestral samba. His arrangements and compositions shine brilliantly in every aspect – melody, harmony and groove. I am proud of this fellow Brazilian musician for this extraordinary accomplishment, and I hope that everyone else will enjoy this album as much as I do." - Jovino Santos Neto, Brazilian pianist & composer.

FROM THE COMPOSER:

“The title of this album -- Vida – comes from my realization that all these compositions have been inspired by stories, events, and facts about my life. The selection of these charts reflects my deep sense of gratitude for the gift of existing and for the privilege of making art; for life’s joys and sorrows, its ups and downs, its moments of collaboration and of solitude. I sincerely hope this music speaks to you and brings inspiration to your life.”- Cassio Vianna.

Vianna, a remarkable composer and arranger, leads an orchestra that is beyond reproach. Little wonder, then, that Vida stands as one of the foremost big-band albums of the year."” - Jack Bowers, All About Jazz.

Vida is superb in every way... musicianship, composition/arranging content, and sonic quality. Cassio not only brings his Brazilian heritage to this fine recording, but also his strong jazz swing expertise. ” - John LaBarbera, jazz arranger & composer
